I bought a sewing machine last year and after proving to myself that I still know how to thread it, it has been sitting in our closet untouched. Just the thought of it makes me feel so guilty. It's not that I don't want to use it, but it's intimidating to just take it out and start sewing as I imagine it may feel for some of you who are interested in learning floral arranging. I am starting to feel like the ultimate hypocrite preaching about taking our classes and not taking those that I've been pining over for months. So, when I heard about Nicole's Classes I thought it doesn't get any easier than this. She offers online classes from anything from sewing 101 to illustrator to baby's, toddlers & kids. What better way to jump back in than to start with her Fall online class. After that I'm eyeing the illustrator 101 course that I've been dying to learn more about.

I had been searching for ages for a large dresser with a little pizzaz and couldn’t find anything affordable that struck my fancy. I decided I’d make something myself. I started with the Tarva Dresser from Ikea.

I liked the fact that it was unfinished- so I could paint it or stain it- and I loved the simple shape. First I puttied and sanded the existing holes for hardware then painted the entire chest in a high gloss color. After some debate, I decided to go with a bright rosey pink. Then came the hardware…

I hot glued these brass corner braces where I wanted them before drilling holes and attaching them. That way I could make sure they were all properly aligned before making them permanent. At first I wanted to have campaign styled hardware but then I came across these leather trunk handles and couldn’t resist.

After lots of measuring & remeasuring I attached the trunk handles and voila! I think one day I might change the color to something a bit more classic but for now I’m stoked to have a fun pop of color brightening up my room.

My apologies for the long gap between posts! With Sierra’s wedding fast approaching and a slew of exciting projects in the mix, the winter has been flying by. Today, I thought I’d share a little project I undertook last night. If you’re in NYC you know it’s been a few of the coldest days on record. I, for one, have not wanted to leave the house but was feeling a little antsy and less then excited about my dull jute rug. I decided to give it a facelift!

Here’s what I started with:

I wasn’t mad about how dark it was so I gave it a brush with white paint that I diluted a bit. Then I decided to add a little color!

I taped out an arrow pattern in line with the herringbone that was already on the rug. I decided to make it equidistant but think it could be cool to experiment with width and spacing.

When I took off the tape I was quite pleased with the result! I used a tomato red paint that had been thinned into more of a stain than paint.

And voila- A way less boring jute rug.

Have a wonderful weekend & stay warm!

xx
